Keynote Speaker: K.C. MacLaren, Starbucks Coffee

Bio

K.C. MacLaren is the director for Mobile and Emerging Platforms at Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle, Washington. Over the years K.C. has designed solutions and managed projects delivering a wide variety of enterprise and consumer-facing software solutions. With Mobile as a key focus area, Starbucks and K.C.’s team recently launched a set of highly successful mobile Apps, including myStarbucks and Starbucks Card Mobile for iPhone. Even before the advent of the App Store, K.C.’s team partnered with Apple to build one of the first iPhone Apps ever – the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks its complement, an in-store Now Playing service.

Prior to his career at Starbucks, K.C. held senior consulting roles at several companies, including Accenture, Perot Systems, and Point B.

 

David Edelstein, Grameen Foundation

Bio

David Edelstein is the Director of the Grameen Technology Center (GTC) and the Vice President of Technology Programs at Grameen Foundation. He guides the foundation’s efforts to create innovative and sustainable approaches for using technology to benefit the world’s poor.

David oversees the development of products and services that leverage technology to put information into the hands of the poor and those serving their needs. The GTC has extensive experience working with mobile phones, delivering services that put vital information on health, agriculture and other topics directly to people with access to basic mobile phones. These models also provide income generation opportunities for the poor. Grameen Foundation’s Application Laboratory was awarded the Global Mobile Award for the "Best Use of Mobile for Social and Economic Development" in 2010.

Prior to joining the Grameen Foundation, David worked at Microsoft designing business models to provide affordable technology products for people in emerging markets. David also worked in Brazil for a number of years, with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he developed business strategies tailored to the needs of consumers and businesses in developing countries. Previously, David conducted economic analyses and evaluated public policy with the White House Council of Economic Advisers and with Resources For the Future.

 

Travis Beaven, UIEvolution

Bio

Travis Beaven is the VP of Products at UIEvolution, responsible for product ideas and execution that deliver results in a complex world beyond the PC. Since joining UIEvolution in 2003, Travis has led product strategy and delivery of connected services for leading brands such as AT&T, Samsung, Disney, ESPN, Fox Interactive, MySpace and NTT Group. Before joining UIEvolution, Travis worked as a Lead Program Manager at Microsoft within the Exchange and SQL divisions. There he managed product development for the enterprise business and planned forward-thinking product strategy for the company. Travis also helped design and deploy the software engineering process for the company.

Prior to Microsoft, Travis served as a Creative Art Director for several Advertising and Design agencies. During this time he helped launch national advertising and marketing campaigns, as well as design creative product strategy for leading service companies within software and mobility.

 

Morgan Belford, Gist

Bio

Morgan Belford is a mobile developer at Seattle-based Gist (www.gist.com) - a next-generation social contact management solution for business professionals.

Previously, Morgan has been a developer and program manager at Microsoft, the Director of Architecture at Getty Images, and the founder of several web and mobile startups, including the mobile-social-location startup Snikkr, a pioneer in making location productive on your smartphone, and less recently StormCloud, Inc, where in 1994 he invented the web application server.

 

Bill Brooks, WhitePages

Bio

As Director of Mobile Business Development for WhitePages, the leading provider of contact information for people and businesses in the U.S., Bill oversees all strategic partnerships in the mobile space.

Before WhitePages, Bill was responsible for all North American marketing, sales and operations activities for Option NV, a top supplier of innovative mobile broadband devices & services. Prior to Option NV, Bill was director of business development and strategy in the Unified Communications Group at Microsoft, where he developed partnerships and business opportunities with major U.S. and European mobile operators.

Before Microsoft, Bill held senior marketing, product development and strategic consulting positions at AT&T Wireless, Northrop Grumman and Scitor Corp. Bill has an MBA from Pepperdine University and a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington.

 

Sheena Chandok, Lucid Communications

Bio

Sheena Chandok is a founding partner of Lucid Communications, a strategic marketing firm, and Mobile {Dev}Sync, a global thought leadership program for the mobile application marketplace. She is also co-chair of Mobile Monday Seattle.

Sheena specializes in marketing and strategic messaging to build brands, define companies as thought leaders and connect players in the mobile application marketplace. She has a powerful combination of wireless, web and mobile application expertise. She is a self-proclaimed Gadget Geek with a global world-view, having lived and worked in China, India and throughout the US.

Through Lucid and Mobile {Dev}Sync, Sheena works with big and small brands, including Samsung, Nokia, Infosys, Navteq, GetJar, Openfeint, Marketwire, Porter Novelli and dozens of mobile application companies like Metaio, Mobile Deposit, Shazam & Urban Airship. Prior to founding Lucid Communications, Sheena was North America Marketing Manager for Bluetooth wireless technology. She directed US-based marketing programs, including launching Bluetooth high-speed technology and spearheaded the design and execution of the Bluetooth hands-free campaign for consumers. She also managed the Bluetooth global Web site and introduced a social media channel, Bluetooth TV.

She has done pro bono work with organizations such as the United Nations - helping to create Web sites for each member nation the Conference Board and Chicago Counsel of Foreign Relations.

 

Tricia Duryee, AllThingsD.com

Bio

Tricia Duryee has been covering technology for more than a decade and her whole career has been spent in Seattle, an area rich in software, mobile and e-commerce. From 2008 to 2010, she reported on the wireless industry as the mobile editor at mocoNews.net and paidContent.org, two U.S.-based sites owned by the U.K.'s Guardian News and Media.

Before mocoNews, Duryee spent eight years at the Seattle Times. From 2005 to 2008, she covered the regional wireless industry, including AT&T Wireless, which launched one of the first 3G networks, Microsoft and a handful of other public companies and start-ups. Many of the national and regional carriers based in the Pacific Northwest have been gobbled up with the exception of T-Mobile USA and Clearwire. During her first six years at the newspaper, she primarily reported on the scrappy start-up and venture capital scene and wrote the occasional weekend cop story.

Duryee attended the University of Oregon, where she received a degree in journalism and a minor in business. She serves on the advisory board of the University’s Snowden internship program, in which she participated as a student.

 

Brian Esler, Miller Nash

Bio

Brian W. Esler joined Miller Nash in 1997 and rejoined the firm in 2003 after spending two years in London, where he earned an LLM in intellectual property law from the London School of Economics and taught law at the University of Hertfordshire. His practice emphasizes commercial litigation, intellectual property advice and litigation, international transactions and litigation, and appellate advocacy. Brian frequently represents companies in the mobile space.

 

Brian Fling, pinch/zoom

Bio

Brian is the Founder and Creative Director of pinch/zoom (http://pinchzoom.com). Brian is a 10-year veteran of the mobile industry and author of O'Reilly's Mobile Design and Development (http://mobiledesign.org). He is an authority in the field of mobile user experience design.

 

Hans Gerwitz, frog design

Bio

As a Technology Director in frog's Seattle studio, Hans directs the local technology team and works closely with creative leadership to inform design programs with the constraints and opportunities of technology. His team mixes breadth with depth in many established and emerging technologies. Hans has also served interim leadership and bootstrapping roles for other frog studios around the world, and has overseen programs for clients throughout the world from startups through the Fortune 500. Much of his focus has been at cross-initiative integration for large clients in the telecommunications industry.

Jaymee Johnson, Isis

Bio

Jaymee Johnson is head of marketing for Isis, a joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless chartered with building a nationwide mobile commerce network that will transform the way consumers shop, pay and save. In this role, Jaymee is responsible for both consumer and business—including merchant, issuer and acquirer—marketing.

Before joining Isis, Jaymee spent six years with T-Mobile USA where he most recently served as Director of Strategic Development and Investments. While at T-Mobile, Jaymee was a member of the core team that developed and incubated the Isis business model. He had previously served in related business development and marketing roles.

Jaymee began his career at aQuantive, in the early days of online advertising, serving in analytical and product management roles within both Avenue A (now Razorfish) and Atlas (now Microsoft).

Jaymee is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jaymee also holds an MBA from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Outside of work, Jaymee enjoys spending time outdoors in the Pacific Northwest with his family.

 

Shehryar Khan, Ubermind, Inc.

Bio

Under Shehryar's leadership, Übermind has emerged as one of the world's leading mobile agencies with a portfolio of award winning apps. Prior to founding Übermind, Shehryar worked at Platinum Technology and Computer Associates developing enterprise solutions around the same technologies that now power the iOS platform and much of the iTunes Music Store.

 

Andy Kleitsch, Billing Revolution

Bio

Andy is a serial entrepreneur bringing a deep background in mobile operator billing technology and mobile data product management. Prior to founding Billing Revolution with its Single Click Checkout product, Andy was the Sr. Manager of the AT&T Wireless mMode portal. Before entering mobile, Andy was the founder of WeddingChannel.com (a leading wedding planning web destination) which was later sold to the Knot for $80+MM. Mr. Kleitsch resides in Seattle Washington and enjoys windsurfing when he is not spending time with his wife and two children.

Lai Lau, AT&T

Bio

Lai Lau is a Lead Product Marketing Manager with the AT&T Business Solutions. She develops strategies, marketing programs, and technical requirements to promote AT&T products and services for enterprise third party vendors and customers. Prior to this role, she worked as a Senior Application Developer in AT&T Wireless Services developing several key wireless applications and initiatives. Lai has worked in the wireless telecommunication industry for over 10 years

 

Joe Megibow, Expedia

Bio

Joe Megibow is currently the VP, Mobile and E-Commerce Optimization at Expedia, the world's leading online travel provider. In his role, Joe has global responsibility for Expedia's mobile initiatives, including Mobiata, the leading provider of mobile travel apps. Joe also oversees e-commerce optimization activities including leading-edge site conversion optimization techniques, marketing, site, and customer analytics, and site experimentation. Finally, Joe has product management responsibility for core eCommerce flows, including product search and checkout. He joined the Expedia, Inc. family in 2006, heading up Online Marketing and Customer Experience for hotels.com.

Prior to hotels.com, he worked for seven years as a charter employee of Tealeaf Technology where he held a variety of leadership roles. Prior to 2000, Joe held management positions at Ernst & Young Management Consulting, where he launched the Java Services practice, E&Y's first ecommerce practice; and engineering positions at EDS in their Advanced Technology Group.

Joe earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and a MBA from the University of Chicago.

 

David O'Neill, ViaFo

Bio

David has over a decade's experience building mobile start-ups and selling mobile solutions. As an early member of the anywhereyougo.com mobile internet lab in London, David led the company's sales efforts leading to the eventual acquisition of the company to Argogroup.

As CEO at Teleca, David built up a string of new businesses, opening new key accounts like Microsoft, Google and Qualcomm, and turning green field ideas into multi-million dollar business streams.

 

David Rice, Miller Nash LLP

Bio

David L. Rice is a business attorney and strategic adviser for clients in the online, mobile communications, and energy industries, as well as a wide range of other industries with issues involving licensing and data privacy. David has worked on hydroelectric-related projects in the Northwest, assisted clients with issues related to mobile communications, handled numerous communications-related transactions, assisted clients with licensing issues and transactions, and negotiated national co-branding and promotions agreements.

 

Anders Rosenquist, ZAAZ

Bio

As the Director of Mobile Strategy at ZAAZ, a digital interactive agency based in Seattle, Anders works closely with team leads to define and execute mobile initiatives for both large and small clients. ZAAZ specializes in creating user-centered, data-driven experiences across digital channels, including mobile, social, and PC. Anders has worked with a range of clients, including Entertainment Weekly, Alaska Airlines, Fortune, CNN Money, and Hard Rock Hotel, to help define and create mobile app, mobile site, and tablet experiences for their customers.

Anders came to ZAAZ in 2007 after independent consulting in the user experience/usability space with a range of industry and government clients. A former academic researcher, he has spent many years studying how kids learn using computer interfaces and devices. Anders has particular interest in mobile UX & usability, information architecture, and interface design. Anders has a B.S. in physics from Loyola Marymount University, an M.S. in Information Management from UW, and did his doctoral work in the learning sciences at Stanford.

 

Gary Roshak, TSR

Bio

Gary Roshak is a wireless industry pioneer and brings more than 25 years of experience in mobile, digital media, and interactive advertising to this conference. At TSR, he provides strategic consulting and interim management support to entrepreneurial ventures. Most recently, as cofounder and member of the Board, he served as interim CEO & President of PhotoRocket, leading a team focused on transforming the photosharing experience and disrupting the current market. Previously, Gary was Vice President, Mobile Advertisers and Publishers, for Yahoo! Inc., where he had global responsibility for the company's mobile advertising and publishing strategy, products and business.

Prior to Yahoo!, he was vice president and general manager at Marchex, where he was responsible for Marchex's local advertising business, connecting tens of thousands of local advertisers to consumers as a leading search- and call-based marketing platform provider for large local advertiser aggregators.

Gary was also a founding member of the executive team that built MFORMA, a leading provider of wireless entertainment content and services to mobile operators worldwide. His career highlights also include senior executive positions with Unity Wireless, Wildfire Communications, and REALOGIC, as well as leading global project teams for AirTouch, where he secured international cellular and paging licenses and launched the resulting wireless operators. Earlier in his career, Gary held management roles in several leading consulting organizations, including Arthur Young & Co. and PRTM.

Gary is a Phi Kappa Phi graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

 

Sajal Sahay, Hewlett-Packard

Bio

Born and raised till the age of 12 in India, Saj and family immigrated to the US in the late 1970s. He spent the next 13 years in Chicago, completing his bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Chicago. Saj then spent the next five years in Europe, primarily Spain and the UK, where he completed his MBA studies in General Management, at IESE Business School, one of the top 15 business schools in the world. Saj is fluent in Spanish, Hindi and English.

Since his MBA, Saj has worked for almost 20 years in roles of increasing responsibility in marketing, finance, operations & general management. He has worked for well known organizations such as IBM, Arthur Andersen & Co., Bausch & Lomb, Philips, T-Mobile, and currently serves as Vice-President of Channel Marketing, for the webOS business at Hewlett-Packard.

In his spare time, Saj volunteers as a member of the Planning Policy Commission for the City of Issaquah, WA, and serves on the Global Alumni Board for the University of Chicago.

 

Gowri Shankar, SinglePoint

Bio

Gowri Shankar is the President and CEO of SinglePoint, and a board member. He has spent the past twenty years within the wireless and media sectors and in many ways continues to provide vision and foresight into the development of the next innovation in the industry. Gowri exhibits a dynamic leadership style and the uncommon vision of the natural entrepreneur. Over the past four years, under Gowri's leadership SinglePoint has firmly established its presence at the forefront of SMS Mobile Advertising. SinglePoint dominates (80% market share per Nielsen) the world of interactive TV and boasts major media clients such as NBCU, Disney/ABC, MTVN/Viacom, CBS, Univision among many others.

Prior to joining SinglePoint, as the General Manager for eAssist Gowri developed and led the international division for the CRM software company. Gowri demonstrated his natural flair for strategic business development early in his career. As a founding member of the Sprint PCS launch team, Gowri created and led the first nationwide telesales and e-commerce distribution channel in the mid 1990s.

Gowri holds a bachelors degree from the University of Madras and a MBA from the University of Missouri.

 

Michael Shim, Groupon, Inc.

Bio

Michael Shim is the Vice President of Mobile Partnerships at Groupon. He is responsible for developing the company’s partnerships with wireless operators, OEMs, mobile platforms and developers worldwide.

Prior to his current assignment, Michael served as Vice President, Mobile Partnerships and Business Development at Yahoo!, where he was charged with developing Yahoo!’s mobile leadership and deep relationships with more than 100 mobile partners around the world. In addition, Michael has held business development and strategy positions at AOL and began his career as a corporate lawyer with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett where he specialized in M&A and securities offerings in the telecom, media and technology sectors.

Michael holds a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Cornell Law School.

 

Rahul Sonnad, Geodelic Systems, Inc.

Bio

Rahul Sonnad founded Geodelic Systems in early 2008 after using a GPS enabled laptop with a 3G internet card everyday for 2 years. Prior to founding Geodelic, Rahul conceived of and founded thePlatform, a Seattle-based digital video web services company. thePlatform now services the majority of large video publishers on braodband and wireless platforms, including Hulu, Verizon Wireless, Helio, CNBC, CBS, ABC News, most Comcast properties, and dozens of other major brands. thePlatform now operates as a subsidiary of the Comcast Corporation, which acquired the company in 2006.

Previously, Rahul worked at Microsoft, managing the R&D activities on the Asian versions of the Office suite, and at Adobe Systems in engineering management. Rahul has a masters in engineering from the University of Washington and attended the Harvard Business School MBA program.

 

Max Spinelli, TiE Seattle

Bio

Max Spinelli is a mobile industry veteran and currently serves as TiE Seattle, a global non-profit organization to foster entrepreneurship, Operations Director and Mobile Special Interest Group Chair, where he is responsible for the chapter plans and charter, processes, best practices, sponsorship revenues and profitability. In addition as Mobile SIG Chair, he is responsible for establishing the chapter brand and value proposition as a leading mobile organization in the Pacific Northwest planning events and programs around industry hot topics and mentoring entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Max has an extensive background in mobile spanning more than 10 years of international experience in the industry with Telecom Italia Mobile, Ericsson, Comverse, Hutchinson Whampoa and his own consulting practice with expertise in developing and distributing mobile applications, content distribution platforms and mobile messaging and location based services globally, working closely with mobile carriers, content owners, brands and advertisers on the development and deployment of rich media experiences across multiple platforms.

Max holds an MSEE from the Polytecnic Institute, Milan, Italy, an MBA from SDA Bocconi, Milan Italy and he is fluent in Italian.

Scott Yoneyama, Teleca USA

Bio

As Director of Business Development at Teleca, Scott Yoneyama has led customer engagements with MTV, ABC, ABC News, Home Shopping Network, Sony Music, and many of the country’s most recognizable media brands. With 2000 people in 11 countries, Teleca’s teams are world-leading experts and suppliers of software solutions and services for connected devices industries where mobile and wireless solutions are used. With a focus on User Experience and Purposeful Feature Design, Scott works to create the vision and design of products and services; architect the business teams and delivery organizations required for their success; and manage the products and services to delivery and launch.

Prior to Teleca, Scott built some of the earliest mobile applications with Action Engine before helping to co-found Mobui, which was one of the early iPhone application development companies. Mobui then acquired Action Engine and he subsequently sold Mobui to Teleca in 2009. Scott founded 3 companies prior to Mobui and spent the early parts of his career building infrastructure in wireless, terrestrial telecom and data centers. Scott holds a BA in Economics from the University of Washington. He spends his spare time as an AAU basketball coach and playing golf.
